Nowadays passport making in our country is quite comfortable due to increase in digitization and rise of e-governance.Our government had taken a quite good steps regarding passport making. The government had implemented a project with Tata Consultancy Services in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.Under this project passport making process and the various verification had become quite easy now for normal person which was cumbersome earlier and also decreased the problem of middlemen(or commonly known as dalals).
So let me explain my experience.
1.At first go to this site www.passportindia.gov.in.
2.Then Click on New User?/Register Now. Fill the details & register their first with your email-id.
3.Now login with your email-id and your password you have created and click on 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport'. Fill the details which will be quite easy. After filling your details you have to give your neighbors name and contacts for background checking .Collect them before filling the online form.
4.After you filled your application pay the fees Rs. 1500(For Normal Quota) or Rs.3000(if you are applying for Tatkal quota) and schedule the appointment at your nearest passport seva kendra(PSK).
(Note: You can also apply under TATKAL quota under which you can get your passport in 7-15 days.I applied for normal quota. I got my passport in 24 days after visiting passport seva kendra(PSK))
5.At PSK the process is quite comfortable. They will verify your documents
1.Birth proof,
2.Address Proof,
3. Non-ECR proof(if you are eligible)) where ECR stands for Emigration Clearance Certificate.
You can see all the eligible documents by clicking on 'Document Advisor'
These are mandatory documents.
I had given my birth-certificate as my birth proof ,aadhar card as my address proof and 10th pass certificate as my Non-ECR document. They also asked for my PAN card and voter card for additional verification. They can also ask for your graduation certificates and college -id cards as it happens to my friends case.
At PSK there will 3 counters to verify your document.
Only the first counter will seriously check your documents. They also take your photos and biometrics.
Remainig counters will be for minor checking only.
You can watch this video for reference.

6.After all the verification happens you will get an acknowledgement copy.
7.Next ,you have to wait for police verification. You will get message notification of 'police verification initiated' on your registered phone number.
(In my case i got call from police within 7 days after visiting the passport seva kendra)
8.The police verification will be little frustrating as it depends on what kind of nature the police official has.
In my case the police had asked for each document i had in my entire life.
My college and school certificates ,parent's voter-id and aadhar card ,residential certificate which i issued from panchayat office, ration card everything.
They may also can ask for some bribe as it happend to my friend's case if the officier is corrupt .Remember it is illegal.
In my case the official is very less corrupt .He only asked for sweets or muh meetha.I bought some 'Rasogulla' from the nearby sweets shop and gave to him.
9.After the police verification ,just sit and wait for your passport to be arrived at your doorsteps. In mean time you can check the status i.e. passport printing, and dispatching through logging in the site and clicking 'Track my application'.
In my case I visited PSK on 10th August.
The police verification happened on 17th August.
And I got my passport on 3rd September.
Thanks.....
